About
Nestled along the bustling stretch of Serangoon Road, Little India is one of Singapore’s most colorful and charismatic ethnic districts. Its roots date back to the early 19th century, evolving from a residential area for Europeans to a thriving hub for Indian migrants engaged in the booming cattle trade. Today, Little India is a vibrant blend of history, culture, and modernity, making it an unmissable stop for locals and visitors alike.
Serangoon Road, historically referred to as “the road leading across the island” on Lieutenant Jackson’s 1828 map of Singapore, serves as the district’s main artery. Stroll through its lively streets to discover a rich tapestry of heritage and modernity. Architectural gems like the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali, and the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple stand as enduring symbols of the area’s spiritual depth. The Angullia Mosque further highlights the district’s diverse cultural fabric.
For a slice of local life, head to Tekka Centre, a vibrant marketplace originally built in 1915 and relocated to its current site in 1982. Known for its delicious Indian fare, fresh produce, and colorful textiles, Tekka Centre encapsulates the energy of Little India.
In 1989, Little India was gazetted as a conservation area, preserving its historical and cultural significance.
Traditional businesses like goldsmiths, saree shops, and garland vendors thrive alongside trendy cafes and boutiques, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. By night, the district buzzes with late-night eateries and lively hangouts, offering round-the-clock activity and excitement.
